Box completely stops responding to the remote

Assuming the batteries in your remote are not flat (most of the remotes have a red LED which lights up when you press a button, so it is easy to tell), if the user interface on the box stops responding, the first thing to try is rebooting the box by holding down the power button on the front of the box until the screen goes blank - it will then restart. If the box does not even respond to holding the power button down, you will have to switch it off using the push button on the rear of the box and then switch it back on again. If this starts to become a frequent occurance, then it would be wise to check your hard drive and run diagnostic tests on it, because it may have developed bad sectors and will need replacing.

When trying to play any recording, you see only a blank black screen

If attempting to play any recording results in a blank screen, the first thing to try is switching the box off/on using the remote. If you are not currently recording anything, this can often be enough to get things moving again. If that doesn't help, restart your box by pressing and holding the power button down on the front of the box until the box restarts. If the problem persists, the filesystem may contain errors - this can be fixed using xfs_repair on Linux. It would also be wise to check your hard drive and run diagnostic tests on it, because it may have developed bad sectors and will need replacing.

Nothing will record

If you have trouble setting any programmes to record via the guide or the box fails to record all scheduled recordings, the filesystem may contain errors - this can be fixed using xfs_repair on Linux. It would also be wise to check your hard drive and run diagnostic tests on it, in case it has developed bad sectors and needs replacing.

SMART Standby Mode not working

I make use the SMART Standby Mode, set to keep my box in low power standby from midnight-6pm. My box developed an issue where it suddenly started not to enter low power standby at all and was always in active standby (hard drive running, more power being consumed). The really weird thing was that the settings for this disappeared from the settings menu also, so it could not even be switched off or no. I tried everything to bring it back and make it work, but in the end a factory reset was needed to fix the issue, whilst leaving my recordings intact. To this day, SMART Standby Mode is still working.
